{semi} DIY wallpaper basket

Just thought I’d stop by & share a quick tutorial on the basket I made for my mantle. You may have seen my collaboration with Laura Ashley & the wonderful team of Styling the seasons bloggers…

As part of the February challenge, we were asked to creatively display Laura Ashley’s new Spring wallpaper & with Lily’s love of gathering things, I was inspired to make her a basket. There are many tutorials on making baskets purely from paper, but I figured I’d need something a little more robust for the swinging arms of an 18 month old!

So, here goes…you’ll need:

Unroll your wallpaper onto the table…I quickly discovered bending over the floor was no easy task!
{oh & get over camera shyness! Cocoa, our dog, included!}

Start by wrapping a sheet around your basket to work out how long your strips need to be…add a couple of inches for good measure.

Next…snip snip into strips. I found that by folding my paper lengthways into 8 sections gave me a good width & a straight line to cut along.

Then comes the folding. Single strips of paper were too delicate when it came to weaving, so to gain some strength I folded each strip in half & then half again. {using the edge of the table was the best way to keep everything straight}

Once you have a few strips gathered, start weaving. There are some amazing weave textures you can create…just search Pinterest. I stuck to a basic weave, like a running stitch!

Once we’d stopped for lunch halfway through, Lily decided to get involved. I found myself having a moment of ‘this’ll be so much fun when she’s older!’ For now she had to make do with playing with scraps, but I can imagine this being a simple Easter basket project for an older child.

I wove each piece to make a seam at the back of the basket, and then used double-sided tape to secure them.

Ta dah! Done! The look of relief on Lily’s face…it only took 5 mins, but she was so ready to get playing with it!!

Have fun with it & do let me know if you choose to make one, I’d love to see it!
